This is an absolute gem. I was going to refer to it as a garden, but that would almost be demeaning. It is a beautiful slice of French countryside, lovingly tended and enhance by thoughtful and knowledgeable owners. It’s a privilege to share the fruits of their labours. If you are ready to spend a thoughtful hour or two wandering among magnificent trees, then this is the place for you.
The site nestles in a valley in the rural Cruese, not far from the picturesque town of Crozant. Access is via small lanes through attractive rural settlements.
The arboretum has that wow factor from first sight. The initial approach is through an impressive tree lined drive across an entrance field which doubles as a car park. Don’t be discouraged by the number of cars parked in my photograph. We visited on a “Plant Sale” day, when vendors from the region sell their plants and trees. Visitors seem to be inspired to buy by the surroundings.
From the entrance the land slopes downward, steeply in places, to a natural stream running through the valley. The route ever downwards meanders past native and rare trees planted in a seemingly random manner, but arranged strategically to achieve that unstructured look.
On the way down there’s a small lake/pond with a Japanese feel to it, with bamboo and a small open platform rising above the water.
Words cannot do this lovely place justice, particularly my words.
Visit, have a look. It’s well worth the entrance fee.
